Eight designers from China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) flew to France on June 11, before taking up their posts at Hinkley Point C (HPC) project in the United Kingdom for the next two-to-three years.
CGN, French state-owned power giant Electricite de France (EDF) and the UK government signed a package of agreements on nuclear power projects, including the HPC project, on Sept 29, 2016.
At the same time, CGN and EDF signed the Technical Assistance Agreement Regarding Design of Hinkley Point C (RD-TAA). According to the agreement, CGN will send 67 designers in three batches to Britain and France to help EDF with the HPC project, with the majority going to France.
Hinkley Point C is the first nuclear new-build project in Britain for more than 20 years. It is proposed to employ the third-generation European Pressurized Reactors (EPR) technology, which is also used by Taishan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in South China’s Guangdong province.
Taishan NPP, co-invested by CGN and EDF, is the third adopting the EPR reactor in the world with fastest progress in construction. CGN has gained considerable experience in design and construction from the project.
This is not the first time for CGN to send employees to overseas projects. In July, 2016, the company sent a commissioning team of 16 engineers to Finland's Olkiluoto NPP, which is the first nuclear plant that uses EPR technology.
They participated in commissioning on site for its third unit (OL3)'s nuclear island auxiliary system, waste treatment, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, fuel loading and unloading and reactor operating system and instrumentation and control system.
This move has further enhanced CGN's competitiveness in commissioning for international projects. It also proved that CGN's expertise has been recognized by the international market.
Chen Yingjian, general manager of the China Nuclear Power Engineering Co, said that the RD-TAA design team is the trailblazer of "going global", just like OL3 commissioning team.
A number of personnel with international vision and ability can be trained through OL3 and RD-TAA projects, which will lay a solid foundation for Bradwell B and Sizewell C projects and facilitate the going-global of HPR 1000 (or Hualong One) reactor, according to Chen.
